Ellington Fridays this week

Some of you might remember the 501 Club, a roadhouse just outside the city on, as you'd imagine, Route 501. The place had a well earned reputation for being a bit north of rowdy. I was there one night about twenty five years ago with some faculty and staff from one of our fine women's colleges.

There was a country band in the corner on a riser that passed for a stage. They were ok except for this bearded, bespectacled horn player. He was much more than ok. When he played the room filled with this bluesy, jazz infested, backwoods, Texas-honking, big ass tenor saxophone that left me reeling.

That was the first time I heard Frank Coffey play and every time I've heard him since has been just as good.

This Friday is an Ellington Friday and Frank Coffey and Company will be serving up great instrumental music mixing Rn'B, jazz, pop, and an occasional foot stomping mandolin piece.

It's a great way to keep your holiday rolling. Bring the family and bring your friends. Our Thanksgiving Ellington Friday is always a great time. Doors open at 5:00 pm and the music starts at 5:30. Admission is still only $5 and we'll kick you out at 8:30 just like always.

Gobble gobble.
